Former DJ’s training firm is a smash hit!

-

Hartlepool Mail, published on Wednesday 4 January 2012 14:00

BUSINESS UPDATE PIC LEAD FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4th.

FORMER nightclub DJ Daniel Pettigrew is a nationwide hit thanks to his own training company.

Hartlepool-born Daniel, started his working career as the DJ in the Gemini nightclub in town, but the licensed retail trade soon beckoned and he joined Vaux Breweries in Sunderland.

Different roles soon followed, in bar and nightclub management, before Daniel became the Regional Promotions Manager for a national leisure company. Daniel said: “It was a troubleshooting role to visit poorly performing venues nationwide and put them back into profit.”

Soon after, in 1997, he started up his own business, Daniel Pettigrew Training, with his wife Alison, who he met whilst working in Dumfries, Scotland, and who is a partner in the company. The couple, who now have a nine-year-old son Oliver, developed the York-based company into a firm which delivers training courses and qualifications all over Britain.

It has proved so successful; Daniel has won the Professional Trainer of the Year title at the National Innkeeping Training Awards, six years after lifting the crown for the first time. The firm was also ‘Highly Commended’ in the Security Training Award category of the awards.

Daniel said: “We have many clients across the industry including national pub companies, supermarket chains, and restaurant and hotel groups, and many colleges and universities. In fact, we do a lot of work with schools and colleges in confidence building, conflict management, and life skills to help young people find work and more experienced students get back to work.

“A large part of my work is taken up with business support, which is visiting businesses which are either struggling and in need of urgent help and some which need new direction and ideas.”

Daniel Pettigrew Training currently have four office staff, and use up to 40 trainers at 30 centres around the UK.

York Evening Press 12.12.11

A businessman has plans to expand in York after winning high-profile recognition for his work at the National Innkeeping Training Awards.

Daniel Pettigrew, who owns Daniel Pettigrew Training in Easingwold, was crowned Professional Trainer of the Year 2011 for the second time, having previously secured the title in 2005. The firm was also highly commended in the Security Training Award category.

Daniel set up the business with his wife in 1997 after moving to York from Newcastle, where he managed nightclubs, bars, hotels and restaurants. Having trained all his own staff, he decided to set up his own training company.

He is now hoping to expand the company’s offer by opening a café-style drop-in centre in York where people, who are thinking of starting a business, can find out about training opportunities and seek advice in a friendly environment.

Daniel trains not only in the hospitality and security sectors, but in leadership and management skills and offers business support, in particular turning around struggling businesses.

He trains from within businesses and in colleges, recently helping unemployed young people get security jobs for the Olympic Games. He has also been appointed by Harrogate international training and leadership consultancy Primeast to do work for them.

He said: “The intention is to get another business and employ more people.” He currently has four office staff, and uses up to 40 trainers at 30 centres around the UK. But he said: “Because we train, we have the best trained people in the business so we could be doing more.”

Daniel is currently looking at premises in York, and hopes he could ultimately roll out the idea as a franchise if it were successful. He said: “There are a couple of places I have got my eye on in York.

A lot of people are looking for a business, but don’t know where to look. I come across many people who want to know how to buy any business, including a pub or restaurant. They could come along, have a coffee, and get some expert advice.”
